Why We Verify Employment Information

To set and change child support and medical orders, child support programs like ours often need to ask employers to verify information about the people who work for them. These workers may be full- or part-time and may also be independent contractors.

Having this information ultimately saves you and us time, since it improves the income-withholding orders and health care coverage notices that we send to you.

The Legal Requirement to Respond to Employment Verification Requests

By law, employers must respond to employment verification requests from child support agencies.

The law mandates that employers provide the child support program with employment and income information about employees and independent contractors to set, change, or enforce child support obligations.

You can remain compliant with California law by completing and submitting the Wage and Insurance Verification form. You have 30 days from the date you received it to return the completed form.

Responding Directly Instead of by Third-Party Verification Services

Some employers use third-party services to respond to employment verification requests. One third-party service, a subsidiary of Equifax called The Work Number, will no longer be accessible to local child support agencies in California.

As a result, employers should always respond directly to any requests from us or any other local child support agencies in California. Do not refer a child support program to The Work Number.
